Sharing Excess | Part-Time, Philadelphia / Reasonable Commuting Distance to Philadelphia
About Sharing Excess
Sharing Excess is one of the fastest-growing food rescue organizations in America, built on a simple but powerful mission: save food and feed communities. What started as a student startup now operates across the country, distributing millions of pounds of food every week to thousands of community partners nationwide.
Our work is fast-paced, creative, and deeply impactful. We operate like a high-growth startup and collaborate with major creators, brands, and partners to bring awareness to food insecurity and food waste. We are looking for team members who are driven, adaptable, and passionate about making a meaningful difference.
Reporting Relationship
- Reports to: Marketing Director
- Direct reports: None — but this role directs and coordinates external creators, freelance editors, and content contractors as needed
- Collaborates with: Marketing & Content Team, Executive Leadership, External Partners, Community Engagement team, and other departments as necessary
Role Overview
The Social Media Manager owns Sharing Excess's organic social strategy and audience growth, with a primary focus on Instagram and TikTok. This is a hands-on, player-coach role built for a startup environment: you set the strategy, carry the growth targets, and personally work the full creator chain — from concepting and capturing in the field, to editing and publishing, to directing outside creators and contractors when we scale a moment up.
You are accountable not just for content that gets made, but for what that content does: reach, engagement, follower growth, and turning real-world impact into a digital presence people want to follow. You'll be a key voice of the brand—bringing energy, authenticity, and empathy to every piece of content—while building the integrated strategy that ties it all together.
What You'll Own
- Channel strategy. Define and continuously evolve Sharing Excess's social strategy across Instagram and TikTok, in partnership with the Marketing Director and leadership.
- Growth targets. Carry measurable goals for follower growth, reach, and engagement, and own the plan to hit them.
- The content system. Build and run the content calendar as a repeatable system, not a one-off posting schedule, balancing planned campaigns with real-time trend response.
- Performance. Track, analyze, and report on content and channel performance, and use those insights to adjust strategy and prove impact to leadership.
- The creator chain. Source, brief, and direct external creators, freelance editors, and contractors when a moment needs to scale beyond what you produce yourself.
What You'll Do
- Concept, produce, and publish engaging content across Instagram and TikTok
- Capture in-person content at food rescues, community events, and pop-ups
- Edit and polish short-form video and photo content, and partner with the content team on larger productions
- Run Instagram Stories, including live and behind-the-scenes coverage
- Monitor social trends and creatively "newsjack" relevant moments for a mission-driven brand
- Lead social execution for awareness and fundraising campaigns, in coordination with the broader marketing team
- Represent the Sharing Excess voice: bold, young, empathetic, and mission-driven
What We're Looking For
- Proven growth. A track record of growing a brand's (or organization's) social following and engagement — you can point to specific accounts you've grown, the before-and-after numbers, and what you did to drive it.
- Strategic ownership. Experience building and running an integrated social strategy, not just producing content to someone else's brief.
- Collaborative operator. You develop strategy with leadership and cross-functional teams and thrive working inside an organization, not as an outside vendor doing drops.
- Full-stack content skills. Strong short-form video editing and content production skills, and the ability to capture compelling content in dynamic, real-world environments.
- Trend fluency. A deep understanding of social trends, formats, and audience behavior, and the judgment to adapt them to a mission-driven brand.
- Startup comfort. You're at home in a fast-paced, lean, startup-style environment where you work up and down the creator chain.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
It's Amazing If You Also Have
- Experience directing or managing freelance creators, editors, or contractors
- A strong personal or professional social media presence of your own
- Experience covering live events or producing in-the-field content
- A strong sense of storytelling and visual creativity
- Fluency with analytics tools and performance reporting
- Experience with nonprofit, cause, or mission-driven brands
You'll Be Successful If
- You own outcomes, not just output — you think in terms of growth, not just posts
- You are creative, proactive, and constantly generating new ideas
- You are comfortable in the field, capturing content in real time
- You stay on top of trends and know how to adapt them to our mission
- You're organized and can manage multiple content streams and contributors at once
- You care deeply about the mission and want to help amplify our impact
